Few songs feel as connected to North Carolina hip-hop history as Petey Pablo’s “Freek-A-Leek.” More than two decades after the track became a defining piece of 2000s Southern hip-hop, that familiar name has another connection to North Carolina at The Southern Maryland Experience in Erwin: Freek-A-Leek Kush.
For people around Erwin, Dunn, Harnett County, and the greater Fayetteville area, the name brings together North Carolina music nostalgia and today’s hemp culture in a way that immediately gets attention.
Quick answer: Petey Pablo is a Greenville, North Carolina native whose “Freek-A-Leek” became one of his best-known songs. Produced by Lil Jon, the track appeared on Still Writing In My Diary: 2nd Entry and became a major hit during 2004. Today, shoppers at our Erwin storefront can also find FREEK-A-LEEK KUSH (OG-KUSH), a THCA hemp flower currently listed in our flower selection. The similar name creates a natural connection to a memorable chapter of Carolina culture, although an official artist collaboration or endorsement should not be assumed.
What local readers should know
Petey Pablo was born in Greenville, giving his music a genuine North Carolina connection that has followed him throughout his career.
“Freek-A-Leek” was produced by Lil Jon and became one of the recognizable Southern hip-hop records of the early 2000s.
Our Freek-A-Leek Kush is currently listed as an OG-Kush THCA flower and indica in our hemp flower selection.
Our storefront is located in Erwin in Harnett County, close to Dunn and within reach of communities traveling the I-95 corridor.
The similar names should not be interpreted as proof that Petey Pablo created, endorsed, or officially partnered on the product unless such a relationship is separately confirmed.
Why Does “Freek-A-Leek” Still Have a North Carolina Connection?
“Freek-A-Leek” still has a North Carolina connection because Petey Pablo built his identity as an artist around his Carolina roots, beginning with music that put the state directly in the national hip-hop conversation. For listeners who remember the early 2000s, hearing his name can immediately bring back a particular era of North Carolina music.
Petey Pablo came from Greenville in eastern North Carolina. Before “Freek-A-Leek,” his breakout record “Raise Up” had already become closely associated with his home state.
Then came “Freek-A-Leek.”
The Lil Jon-produced track carried the high-energy Southern sound that was becoming impossible to ignore during that period. It appeared on Still Writing In My Diary: 2nd Entry and climbed to No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2004.
That history gives the phrase instant recognition for plenty of adults who grew up listening to Southern hip-hop.
Here in Harnett County, that connection feels especially close. Greenville may be farther east, but Petey Pablo’s music has always represented North Carolina as a whole, from Raleigh and Fayetteville to Dunn, Erwin, and communities throughout the eastern half of the state.
What Is Freek-A-Leek Kush?
Freek-A-Leek Kush is an OG-Kush THCA hemp flower currently listed by The Southern Maryland Experience as an indica and part of our Tier 4 budget flower selection. It gives local adult hemp shoppers another flower option while carrying a name that is difficult for longtime North Carolina hip-hop fans to overlook.
At our Erwin storefront, we carry a broader selection of hemp products that includes THCA flower, edibles, concentrates, pre-rolls, accessories, and other hemp-derived products.
Freek-A-Leek Kush sits within that flower lineup.
The important distinction is that the song and the flower are separate things. The shared wording creates an obvious cultural association, but we do not want to turn that association into a story that has not been documented.
Why Does the Name Stand Out in Erwin?
The Freek-A-Leek name stands out in Erwin because it combines a recognizable piece of North Carolina music culture with a product available locally in Harnett County. For adults who remember hearing Petey Pablo throughout the 2000s, seeing that name on a flower menu can trigger immediate recognition.
Erwin has its own strong local identity.
The community was historically associated with denim manufacturing and is still connected closely with neighboring Dunn. Fayetteville is to the south, Raleigh is within the broader regional orbit, and I-95 puts this part of Harnett County on one of North Carolina’s busiest travel corridors.
Our roots may trace back to Southern Maryland, but our North Carolina storefront puts us directly inside this community.
That is why Carolina references hit differently here. They are not abstract pop-culture references. They are connected to artists, places, memories, and experiences local residents actually recognize.
What Should Shoppers Know About THCA Flower?
THCA flower is hemp flower containing tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, and shoppers should focus on product testing, labeling, applicable laws, and responsible use rather than relying on a strain name alone. A memorable name may get your attention, but it should never be the only information you consider.
THCA and THC are related but not identical compounds. Heat can convert THCA into THC through a process called decarboxylation, which is one reason consumers should understand what they are purchasing before deciding whether a product is appropriate for them.
We encourage customers to look beyond packaging and names.
Ask what the product is. Read the available label information. Review testing information when available. Understand the type of flower you are purchasing and remember that individual experiences can vary.
Hemp laws and regulations can also change. Local shoppers should follow current North Carolina requirements and product restrictions rather than assuming that rules remain permanently unchanged.
What Are Some Common Mistakes When Choosing Hemp Flower?
The most common hemp flower mistakes include buying based only on a strain name, ignoring available testing information, and assuming every product with similar branding will provide the same experience. Erwin-area shoppers can make more informed decisions by asking questions before purchasing.
Mistake: Choosing solely because you recognize the name.
Consequence: A memorable name tells you very little by itself about the actual product.
Better approach: Check the flower type, labeling, cannabinoid information, and available testing details.
Mistake: Assuming THCA flower is the same as CBD flower.
Consequence: You may purchase something different from what you intended.
Better approach: Ask about the cannabinoid content and understand the distinction before buying.
Mistake: Treating a cultural reference as an endorsement.
Consequence: Similar names can create assumptions that are not supported by the facts.
Better approach: Separate the product itself from the music reference unless an official partnership has been documented.
How Can Erwin Shoppers Compare Their Flower Options?
Erwin shoppers can compare flower options by looking at cannabinoid information, flower type, product tier, testing information, aroma preferences, and budget instead of relying on popularity alone. That makes it easier to narrow a larger selection to products that better match what you are actually looking for.
Freek-A-Leek Kush is not the only flower in our local selection. Our current menu includes multiple THCA flower choices across different tiers.
For someone new to hemp flower, that variety can be confusing.
That is where a local storefront can help. Instead of trying to interpret every product name by yourself, you can ask questions about the differences among available options.

That puts us close to Dunn and convenient for people traveling from other parts of Harnett County or through the I-95 corridor. Customers also visit the area from communities toward Fayetteville and elsewhere in eastern and central North Carolina.
Product availability can change, so checking the current selection is the best way to know what is available.
Why Should You Avoid Waiting Until a Product Is Gone?
Waiting can mean a particular flower is no longer part of the current selection because hemp flower menus and individual product availability can change over time. If Freek-A-Leek Kush is the specific product that caught your attention, check current availability rather than assuming it will always be on the shelf.
That is especially true when a product has a memorable name.
A shopper might first notice Freek-A-Leek Kush because of the North Carolina hip-hop connection, then decide to learn more about the actual flower. The important next step is evaluating the product itself rather than buying solely because the name is familiar.
